Drawing project, March 2009: continuing my work with light and line, these slides were intended to be projected onto the wall of a dark space, however as there wasn't such a space available, I projected the images and took photographs of them. The exhibition of work consisted of displaying the slides on a light box with images of three of the ten slides displayed alongside. The contrast of the tiny marks on the slides and the projected image was the key interest, the contrast of micro vs macro. More detailed images can be found on the drawing page.

'Kyoto traces' (screen print, white ink, Japanese paper) The print is taken from a stencil bought from an antique shop in the Gion district, Kyoto. The stencil was at the bottom of a drawer, folded into four and rather battered; the paper is twisted at certain points to give varying widths of lines and there are connecting bridges to keep the whole thing from falling apart. It is hand cut, an example of the skill of the stencil cutters of Japan. I wanted to bring life back to the stencil but it's delicate condition meant it couldn't be used directly; I repaired the stencil, exposed it to a silkscreen, and printed the resulting image.
